Haney-Leighton Fund Board Membership
Information and Recruitment
The Haney-Leighton Fund is a donor-advised fund in Maine founded with a bequest from Elly Haney and named in honor of Elly and her long-time partner Debbie Leighton. The Fund provides grants to individuals, churches, or organizations to initiate or continue social justice programs, with a mission of using social action to change the political, social, cultural, economic and religious conditions that create injustice. The Fund focuses its grantmaking on Maine-based individuals and grassroots organizations that historically have been marginalized or that may not be eligible for traditional funding sources. More information about the Fund and its grantees can be found here.
The Haney-Leighton Fund is seeking to add new members to its Board of Directors who share Elly's and Debbie's commitment to social action in Maine. Previous Board experience is not required, and we encourage applications from people with lived experience in the communities served by our grantees, including people of color, Indigenous people (Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Maliseet, and Mi'kmaq), recent immigrants, people with disabilities, people from a low-income or working-class background, LGTBQ+ people, and youth. Although not required, experience with social justice organizing in Maine, nonprofit leadership or finance, or social media and digital communications is a plus.
Board members are responsible for managing the Fund, including:
- Collectively making decisions as to the strategic direction of the Fund
- Annually reviewing letters of intent and grant applications and deciding which grants to award
- Communicating with grantees
- Ensuring the Fund's financial well-being
- Ensuring the Fund's compliance with applicable laws and regulations
- Maintaining the Fund's public-facing website and communications.
This is a volunteer position. Board members are expected to attend about 3 - 4 Board meetings per year (in person or via video) and can anticipate spending an average of 2-3 additional hours per month on administrative tasks for the Board, including reviewing letters of intent and grant applications.
To apply, please send a resume and cover letter that describes your interest in the Haney-Leighton Fund, demonstrates your commitment to its mission, and discusses any skills or experience relevant to the Board member position, including lived experience in the communities served by our grantees, to haneyfund@gmail.com. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
